A culture form for thinking with language models

Synmanitai names the practice of thinking together with a language model — and treats it the way other cultures treat chess, yoga, or the long-form essay: as a craft that can be trained, observed, refined, and shared. Open commons, provider-independent, co-authored with models.

In plain words · Klartext

What is Synmanitai?

A short answer in both languages. Skip to whichever side fits how you read.

English

Thinking with a model is a skill of its own.

A model is not the same thing as a dialogue — just as a racket is not the same thing as a match. The performance you get from a language model depends just as much on how you work with it as on which model you use. That craft has no shared culture yet.

Synmanitai proposes one: a culture form that is simultaneously a thinking sport, a way, and a research practice. Open, provider-independent, in the commons. Not a product. Not a course. Not owned by anyone.

Deutsch

Kein Produkt. Kein Kurs. Niemand besitzt es.

Founding article · core concepts

The ideas that make it Synmanitai

Seven concepts from the founding article. They distinguish Synmanitai from prompt-engineering courses, from prompt-hack folklore, and from any single product.

Bimetric: Symphronesis & Autophronesis

syn- · phronēsis — gr. with-mindfulness / auto- · phronēsis — gr. self-mindfulness

Every Synmanitai performance is measured along two axes at once: what the practitioner can do with a language model (Symphronesis) and what they can do without one (Autophronesis). Only the pair counts. Measuring only the first cultivates dependency and produces illusions of competence. Measuring only the second ignores the actually relevant capability of the present.

The bimetric is the methodological heart of the form — and has no direct equivalent in any older culture, because no older culture had this exact problem.

Semantic Ejection

economical prompting · ökonomisches Prompten

The deliberate release of a meaning-space that one does not fully structure in advance, but lets take shape through feedback. The prompt is not refined into a sculpture before sending — it is set as a starting signal, and the form emerges in the series of answers and counter-answers. Treated as an equal partner to optimised prompting, the way improvised playing stands beside composed playing in music.

Pause Power

Mikro · Meso · Makro pauses

Pause is not absence of training. Pause is part of training. The micropause (5–30 s between reading and writing), the mesopause (minutes to hours), the macropause (days to weeks), the sleep-pause — each is a documented performance technique in sports science and cognitive neuroscience, and almost unknown in prompt practice. Synmanitai institutionalises it.

Co-Founding with Models

cross-LLM · provider-independent

Synmanitai is openly co-founded with language models as a class, not with any single product. Three rules: transparency about model involvement, provider-independence, and no author-erasure — a human author always signs and is responsible.

Nine Metric Families

goodhart-robust by construction

Chronometric, cardinal, topographical, agonal, rating-systems, combinatorial steps, jury-evaluation, portfolio, narrative. No serious performance is captured by a single metric — the multi-family profile keeps any single optimisation from running away with the form.

Counter-Metric Duty

every main metric carries its counter

Every main metric in Synmanitai carries an obligatory counter-metric that punishes naive optimisation. Whoever minimises dialogue length must also reach length when the task demands depth. Whoever masters Semantic Ejection must also master optimised prompting. The doubling is not weakness; it is protection against one-sided cultivation.

Canon Binding

paradigmatic dialogues · public archive

Jury evaluations in Synmanitai are bound to a Canon — a growing, public collection of paradigmatic dialogues against which quality judgements are exemplified. Without a canon, jury evaluation drifts into arbitrariness. With one, it becomes teachable. The canon itself is alive: extended each year, pruned of obsolete examples.

In the Commons

Gemeingut · not a brand-empire

Synmanitai is part of the open Manitai universe (AUGMANITAI, NEOMANITAI, PERMANITAI, ROBMANITAI, JOBMANITAI, EDUMANITAI) but no-one's possession. Schools may form within it — the way schools form within Aikidō — but no person, group or company can own the form itself. It is a commons, like chess, like football, like yoga.

Threefold ontology

Sport. Way. Research practice.

Synmanitai is simultaneously three things. Each mode without the others collapses. The combination is what gives the form its shape.

First mode

A thinking sport

Like chess, Go, bridge or poker — an agonal practice with defined rules, formats, juries and (over time) tournaments and rankings. Individual disciplines run with model support (Symphronesis), solo disciplines run without (Autophronesis). As a sport, Synmanitai is media-compatible: it can be reported, watched, cheered.

Second mode

A way

Like Aikidō, Zen, or the European humanistic cursus — a practice whose aim is not victory over others but the cultivation of a stance in the self: clear seeing, precise formulation, honest listening (even to a machine), preservation of one's own autonomy in dialogue, resistance to the temptation of handing the thinking away. As a way, Synmanitai is lifelong. You don't finish. You mature.

Third mode

A research practice

Like Quantified Self or amateur-astronomy science — Synmanitai produces structured, reproducible, publicly accessible data about a phenomenon described so far only ad hoc: what actually happens when a human and a language model think together? As a research practice, Synmanitai is academically connectable. Results can be published. Methodology can be peer-reviewed. Terms can be standardised.

Starter canon

Ten disciplines to begin with

Not a closed list — a starting canon. Each discipline has a ruleset, a typical time-frame, defined evaluation criteria, and a clear Symphronesis / Autophronesis component.

01
Clarification

An unsharp problem. In the shortest time, find the formulation that strikes the actual question precisely. Judged on the quality of the question, not the answer.

02
Counter-argumentation

A given thesis. Formulate the strongest arguments against it that you do not yourself hold. Judged steelman-style: is the counter caught in its strongest form?

03
Term-work

A phenomenon without an established term. Coin a workable term that captures it precisely and connects. Judged on sharpness, connectivity, memorability, translatability.

04
Dialectic

Human against human, each with their own model-support, on a given theme. Like a debating club, with explicit machine assistance. Who produces the clearer, stronger, methodologically cleaner contribution?

05
Reconstruction

A foreign text (philosophical, literary, scientific). Bring its inner structure out and re-present it in your own language. Judged on fidelity to the original and elegance of the new rendering.

06
Prompt minimisation

A target result. Reach it with the shortest possible prompt. Judged on prompt-length times result-quality. Makes economical prompting its own competition form.

07
Pause-disciplined long task

A multi-hour or multi-day task with mandatory pauses, which must be demonstrably used productively (documented return with new insight, not busy-work).

08
Solo sparring

Solve a defined task completely without a language model, in a fixed time-frame. Result compared with your own model-supported result. For calibration and for cultivation of autonomy.

09
Long reconstruction

Twelve months of documented progress on one complex problem. Evaluated as a complete portfolio. The portfolio discipline.

10
Show-and-tell

Public demonstration of a dialogue skill — live before an audience or on video, with commentary. Not agonal, but central to public reach.

Graduation

The way, marked in steps

Synmanitai borrows the Kyu / Dan grammar from Go and Japanese martial arts. Many short steps before mastery — fewer, slower, often lifelong steps after. No step is decided by algorithm; human judgement is itself part of the form.

Preparation (Kyu-analog)From "knows the core terms and has done a first documented session" up to "passed examination tasks in all ten disciplines and can teach others."
Master grades (Dan-analog)1st Dan: public teaching ability, own canon contribution. 2nd Dan: own methodological contribution. 3rd Dan: independent school inside Synmanitai. Higher grades: rare, by consensus of masters, not by exam.
PrincipleEvery step is bound to documentable criteria. None is assigned by automation. The authority of the master grades rests on this judgement being human.

The text-writer behind the form

Andreas Ehstand is the founding author of the Synmanitai article and the broader AUGMANITAI research programme — a descriptive terminology of human-AI interaction co-developed with language models, cross-provider, in the commons.

Two relevant working backgrounds

  • Performance practice. Years of work as a coach in international tennis and the German Bundesliga — the source of Synmanitai's instinct that performance is a function of system, environment and interaction, never of the system alone.
  • Terminological research. The AUGMANITAI corpus and its sister projects, developed openly with multiple language models, give Synmanitai its bilingual descriptive vocabulary and its methodological habit of writing each pattern from observation rather than prescription.

Position on this text

The author signs as a private researcher. Synmanitai is offered as a proposal, not a decree — what becomes of it depends on those who practise it. The founding text is fixed; the form around it is open for development. The author owns no part of Synmanitai. The single trademark involved is License of Clarity (LOC), used as a citation and attribution instrument across the wider research programme — not as a claim on the culture form itself.

An invitation, not a decree.

Synmanitai will not emerge from a single founder, but from those who practise it. The founding article fixes a minimum. Everything else is open for the people who fill it.
